Grinding Research Center and Industry Consortium
Service Network Inc. Leads Effort to Form a Grinding Research Center
June 19, 2006
Service Network, Inc., builder of precision OD and ID grinding machines is spearheading an effort with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to form a grinding research center located in Worcester, Massachusetts. The grinding research center will host industry consortiums, each with an individual focus. The consortium currently being introduced is termed a practical applications research consortium and will focus on improving member firms’ grinding processes by studying key segments of the grinding process.
The advisory board lists internationally recognized contributors to grinding process knowledge including Robert Hahn, Stephen Malkin and John Webster.
Among the distinctive features of the grinding research center and this consortium, under the direction of Chris Brown, is that an abrasive process lab and surface metrology lab work together. WPI’s Surface Metrology Lab is internationally known for its work on the measurement and characterization of surface textures and topography in diverse applications and for discoveries of the correlations between roughness, adhesion and friction. This is key to abrasive process research since abrasive processes use the surface topographies of the abrasive to create surfaces on the workpiece while the workpiece abrades the abrasive. The capability to examine this interaction is valuable to harnessing potential improvements in the grinding process. This laboratory affiliation opens the way to new approaches to better understand the grinding process and to capitalize on opportunities that take the shape of practical applications.
“Service Network, in leading the effort to develop the grinding center and this consortium, contributes various levels of support including use of it’s OEM OD and ID precision grinding machines,” Jim Camp of Service Network says in a statement. “Saint-Gobain has joined WPI and Service Network as a cosponsor. The cosponsors believe that because grinding is a high-value-added process it plays an essential role in industrialized countries, and that a grinding center and consortiums like this one reinforce our global competitiveness.”
Combining the strengths of a world-class technical institution, two world-class research laboratories, a prominent machine tool builder, a renowned abrasives manufacturer and industry partners all focused on developing ways to grind more efficiently presents an opportunity worth consideration. Membership is currently forming for this practical applications consortium. ULTRA PRECISION GRINDING MACHINES
SERVICE NETWORK, INC. ANNOUNCES NEW LINE OF ULTRA PRECISION GRINDING MACHINES
SNI’s new Ultra Series of Production Grinding Machines is offered in the same capacities as SNI’s SN200/400/600 family of ID/OD production grinders. While the level of performance delivered by the Ultra is not warranted for most precision, high performance grinding applications, it is available to address applications where sub-micron accuracies are required for product profile, where the grinding process dictates multi-axis contour grinding and/or dressing. Such applications are found in the aerospace, defense, and specialty bearings business industries. The Ultra includes a certification of accuracies from an independent laboratory. For more information, please contact SNI’s marketing team, and request an application review. SNI’s engineers will recommend the best, and most cost-effective solution to your application and production challenges.

GATOR DIAMOND OFFERS NEW “GREEN EARTH” FIXED ABRASIVE FOR LAPPING AT LOW PRESSURE
After years in development, Gator Diamond, Inc. (GDI) has announced they are now manufacturing diamond fixed abrasives in a vitreous matrix with superior removal rates and surfaces on most alloys (including ferrous metals). These same abrasives have an excellent record on sapphire and very hard ceramics. The new capability is applicable to flat plate lapping pressures at 8 psi or less with fixed abrasives. This is made possible with special formulations of vitreous compounds that perform well where resin matrix fixed abrasives fail.
Under similar conditions, GDI’s fine-grinding products can be expected to run between 3 and 10 times the removal rate and always with lower surface Ra and sub-surface damage (SSD) than loose abrasives. An added benefit is the reduction of expense in removing swarf. With these fixed abrasives, the amount of waste (often hazardous) is reduced to less than 5% of that typical of loose abrasives.
Flat-plate lapping rarely produces over 10 psi and usually operates closer to 3 psi. Operations that must yield very low SSD may operate at less than one psi. While there are a few machines that can reach 20 or even 30 psi, few shops have them. Tiles that are designed to work at high pressures will not work well at low pressures. They may stop cutting before the first run is completed.
Results depend on materials and machine, but GDI awaits your call to arrange a sample run to find just how much cost can be cut from your product. They’re not magic, but they may be the next best thing.
The accompanying photo shows a pair of 15.5 inch plates for a PR-1. The thickness of these tiles is about 6 mm.

MACH-B OFFERS SLOTS
Coolant and air-flow enhancing slot choices for cylindrical grinding wheels
Winona, MN, February 1, 2006
Mach-B Grinding Wheel Shaping & Resizing now offers two coolant and air-flow enhancing slot choices for cylindrical grinding wheels up to 42" diameters.
Standard wheel slotting creates 60 slots per side, one slot measuring .090" wide and .125" deep every 6 degrees. Angle groove slotting creates 45 slots measuring .090" wide by .125" deep at 12 degrees to the wheel centerline – one slot every 8 degrees. Pricing ranges from $125 to $255 per wheel depending on the diameter and slotting choice.
Slotting is a low cost solution to the problem of grinding wheel wear, particularly that of corner radius wear common in plunge grinding applications. Corner radius wear is caused by heat build-up at the intersection of the wheel sides and edge radius. Research has shown that wheels with slots manufactured or cut into them significantly increase coolant and air flow to the grinding zone. This results in superior grinding performance and longer wheel life. Specific benefits include: intermittent cutting at the corner and side face reducing friction and thermal effects; superior flushing of wear particles and chips reducing wheel glazing; and better surface integrity for the ground piece.
For more information about slotting and other shaping and resizing options, see the website for Mach-B Grinding Wheel Shaping & Resizing on the web at http://www.mach-b.com .
